1970 Brantford Blues

The Brantford Blues women’s basketball team, lead a very successful season. The Blues, barring a complete collapse, were projected to win the Ontario Ladies Basketball Association Intermediate Championship against Waterloo in 1970.

Unfortunately, the Blues ran into a few funding problems off the court. The financial crisis that the team faced was so dire that they could not afford to go to the championships, despite having the skill. Miraculously, the funding appeared and the team went on to take the championship. The Brantford Blues earned the championship title at Herman E. Fawcett Secondary School on Monday March 9, 1970, defeating Waterloo Harmony Angels. Their victory qualified the Blues for the Canadian Championship held out of province later in the month.

The Blues played a few exhibition games in and around Brantford during the wait for Nationals. This kept their skills fresh for the fierce competition waiting for them at the Championship. The National Championship began with a total point series against the Hamilton Dumonts. The Blues lost their first game in the series and unfortunately were not able to bring home a National Championship but their achievements and determination are certainly something to be admired and honoured.
