Wayne Gretzky Brantford native Wayne Gretzky played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), with four teams, from 1979 to 1999. He is known as "The Great One" and holds the reputation as the greatest hockey player ever. He maintains the position as the leading point scorer in the NHL, with more assists than any other player has points. He is also the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season, a feat he accomplished four times.
