Gary Summerhays

Gary Summerhays 1984 Inductee – Athlete, Boxing 

The name Summerhays is synonymous with the sport of boxing in Brantford. Before turning professional, Gary won over 100 of his 125 amateur fights. On April 20, 1970, in Windsor, Ontario, Gary and his two brothers turned professional. He won his very first professional match, and in 1973 won the Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight crown.

    British Commonwealth Light-Middleweight Title Belt

    This belt was won by Gary Summerhays on February 27, 1978, after knocking out Tony Mundine of Australia in the 11th round. Mundine was ahead in points at the time of the knockout. This took place in Melbourne, Australia.

    Canadian Light-Heavyweight Championship Belt

    Gary Summerhays earned this belt on December 18, 1979. He won the belt after defending the Canadian Light Heavyweight title against Jean-Claude LeClair in Montreal.

    O’Keefe Canadian Light-Heavyweight Championship Belt

    This belt was received on March 1, 1980 by Gary Summerhays after successfully defending the Canadian Light Heavyweight title against Eddie Melo in Montreal.
