Paul Szczechura

2025 Inductee – Athlete, Hockey

Paul Szczechura is a Canadian hockey player known for his work ethic and on ice vision. Raised in Brantford, Ontario, he enjoyed a lengthy hockey career across multiple leagues.

Szczechura spent his youth with the Brantford Minor Hockey Association and Jr. B Brantford Golden Eagles, earning both the league MVP and Scoring Champion. Although drafted to the OHL, he chose to accept a scholarship to Western Michigan University. While at WMU, Szczechura was named to the CCHA All Rookie team and was a two-time CCHA Scholar Athlete. In acknowledgement of his success as a WMU athlete, he was recently awarded the Ring of Honor at his alma mater.

Undrafted in the NHL, he earned his opportunity through determination, signing with the Tampa Bay Lightning and making his debut during the 2008-09 season. He went on to play 3 seasons with both Tampa Bay and the Buffalo Sabres, showcasing his playmaking ability and hockey intelligence. Paul was also well known as a consistent offensive contributor and respected veteran in the American Hockey League.

Following the 2012 NHL lockout, Szczechura headed overseas to play in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Over 8 seasons, he established himself as one of the top Canadian players in the league, putting up 258 points in 431 games. While in the KHL, Szczechura earned multiple accolades, including a spot on the KHL All-Star team, a Bronze medal, and the Nadezhda Cup. On the international stage, he has also represented Team Canada in two tournaments overseas, including the Deutschland Cup.

After years playing the sport he loves on the ice, Szczechura has retired and now represents Team Canada Inline on the floor in annual tournaments. He has also stayed active within the Brantford Minor Hockey Association, and coaches his son’s 99ers team. This Brantford Sports Hall of Recognition honors not only his on-ice achievements, but also his character, resilience, and contributions to the sport of hockey.
