Ted Wierda

2002 Honouree – Builder, Basketball

Ted Wierda Ted Wierda, a Brant County teacher, founded the Briers Basketball Club in January 1978 with two dozen players. With the effort of other dedicated volunteers, the club grew to over 60 house league teams and more than 12 travel select teams achieving many Ontario and two Eastern Canadian championships. Wierda served as an executive member for 20 years while coaching for 18 seasons and winning several Ontario Basketball championships. He was the first convener of junior coed basketball for Brant County public schools started in 1984. It grew to over 30 teams by 2000. Ted also served as a coach and executive in baseball and fast pitch softball in Brantford for over 25 years. Ted was named Brantford's Sportsman of the Year in 1984 for coaching Ontario championship teams in basketball and baseball in the same year.
